The Revolution’s Promise (A Promessa de Revolução) é um projeto criativo de mobilização de massas que nasceu, antes desta guerra, com o objetivo de criar um debate global sobre a censura da cultura palestiniana e o papel que as artes desempenham na luta pela justiça, igualdade e autodeterminação.
Nesta ação, inserida no Festival Periferias, organizamos um workshop de dois dias onde iremos ler em coletivo uma coleção de testemunhos de artistas de toda a Palestina, celebrando a resistência cultural e destacando a censura e os ataques a artistas. O principal objetivo é criar um debate participativo. No terceiro dia, apresentamos essas leituras e reflexões ao público em geral (em português), dando depois espaço a que a conversa se expanda a todos os presentes.

The Revolution’s Promise is a creative mass mobilization project that was born, before this war, with the aim of creating a global debate about the censorship of Palestinian culture and the role that the arts play in the fight for justice, equality and self-determination.
In this action, part of the PERIFERIAS Festival, we organized a two-day workshop where we will collectively read a collection of testimonies from artists from all over Palestine, celebrating cultural resistance and highlighting censorship and attacks on artists. The main objective is to create a participatory debate. On the third day, we will be presenting these readings and reflections to the general public (in Portuguese), giving them room for the conversation to flow between all persons present.

SOLIDARIEDADE GLOBAL – Realizar múltiplas leituras/performances em todo o mundo e construir uma rede de solidariedade global.

PARAR OS ATAQUES – Uma geração de artistas está em risco. Esperamos que, ao criar um diálogo global e uma solidariedade mundial, isso pressione Israel para parar os ataques.
CONECTAR – Conectar estudantes, artistas, ativistas, sindicatos e qualquer pessoa interessada às artes e cultura palestinas.
CONVERSAR – Levar a que os participantes iniciem uma conversa com sua comunidade local, teatro ou universidade sobre o papel da cultura na luta pela mudança na Palestina e além.
CELEBRAR – Celebrar um dos setores artísticos mais radicais e emocionantes do mundo e as pessoas que estão no centro dele.

STOP THE ATTACKS – A generation of artists are at risk, we hope by creating global conversation and world-wide solidarity it will put pressure on Israel to stop the attacks.
CONNECT – Connect students, artists, activists, unions and anyone interested, to Palestinian arts and culture.
CONVERSATION – Lead the participants to begin a conversation with your local community, theatre, or university on the role of culture in fighting for change in Palestine and beyond.
CELEBRATE – Celebrate one of the worlds most radical and exciting arts sectors and the people at the heart of it.
JULIANO MER KHAMIS & CULTURAL RESISTANCE – Commemorate Juliano Mer Khamis and his legacy of using culture as a form of resistance, as well as the role this plays in the fight for justice, equality and Palestinian self-determination.
O Freedom Theatre é um dos teatros políticos mais emocionantes do mundo. Com sede no campo de refugiados de Jenin, na Palestina, foi co-fundado por Zakaria Zubeidi, líder da Brigada dos Mártires de Al Aqsa e atualmente preso por Israel, e Juliano Mer Khamis, ator e diretor que desde então foi assassinado. O teatro foi fundado no final da segunda intifada e é famoso por usar a resistência cultural e pelas artes para lutar pela justiça e por uma Palestina livre.
Eles encenam produções teatrais profissionais, realizam oficinas de teatro no campo de refugiados, na cidade e nas aldeias de Jenin, oferecem formação em atuação, pedagogia e fotografia e publicam livros, exposições e curtas-metragens. Desde que abriu as suas portas em 2006, o coletivo tem colocado o teatro e as artes visuais à disposição de todos os jovens do campo de refugiados de Jenin. O seu trabalho tornou o campo de refugiados de Jenin conhecido na Palestina e internacionalmente pelas suas produções teatrais e mediáticas inovadoras e instigantes. Têm criado uma geração de artistas e líderes que um dia estarão na vanguarda do movimento de libertação palestiniana.
Os desafios artísticos e práticos foram imensos, o edifício foi atacado pelo exército israelita, foram enviadas ameaças de morte e membros do teatro foram detidos, interrogados, encarcerados e torturados psicologicamente.
A 13 de Dezembro, no meio de um dos maiores ataques a Jenin em décadas, o exército israelita saqueou e vandalizou o The Freedom Theatre. Os soldados foram então às casas do diretor artístico Ahmed Tobasi, do produtor Mustafa Sheta e do recém-formado da Escola de Artes Cênicas do Freedom Theatre, Jamal Abu Joas, vendaram-nos, algemaram-nos e levaram-nos embora. Tobasi foi libertado após 24 horas e Abu Joas após oito dias, mas Sheta continua preso – condenado a seis meses de “detenção administrativa” (uma classificação que Israel utiliza, ao abrigo da lei marcial, para deter suspeitos sem acusação). A comunidade cultural em todo o mundo, bem como muitas ONG de direitos humanos, apoiam-nos e continuam a apelar à libertação enquanto os ataques continuam.
Apesar de tudo isto, pelo seu trabalho contínuo e resiliência, foram nomeados para o Prémio Nobel da Paz de 2024.

The Freedom Theatre is one of the worlds most exciting political theatres. Based in Jenin Refugee camp in Palestine it was co-founded by Zakaria Zubeidi, leader of Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade and currently inprisioned by Israel, and Juliano Mer Khamis, actor and director who was since then murdered. The theatre was established at the end of the second intifada and is famous for its use of cultural resistance and using arts to fight for justice and a free Palestine.
They stage professional theatre productions, hold theatre workshops in the refugee camp, Jenin town and villages, offer training in acting, pedagogy and photography, and publish books, exhibitions and short films. Since it opened its doors in 2006, the colective has made theatre and visual art available to every young person in Jenin refugee camp. Their work has made Jenin refugee camp known in Palestine and internationally for innovative, thought-provoking theatre and media productions. They have been creating a generation of artists and leaders, who one day will be at the forefront of the Palestinian liberation movement.
The artistic and practical challenges have been immense, the building has been attacked by the Israeli Army, death threats have been sent and members of the theatre have been arrested, interrogated, imprisoned and psychologically tortured.
On December 13, in the midst of one of the biggest raids on Jenin in decades, the Israeli army ransacked and vandalized the Freedom Theater. The soldiers then went to the homes of Artistic Director Ahmed Tobasi, Producer Mustafa Sheta, and recent graduate of the Freedom Theatre Performing Arts School Jamal Abu Joas, blindfolded and handcuffed them, and took them away. Tobasi was released after 24 hours, and Abu Joas after eight days, but Sheta remains imprisoned—sentenced to six months of “administrative detention” (a classification Israel uses, under martial law, to hold suspects without charge). The cultural community worldwide, as well as plenty Human Rights ONGs, stand with them and keep on calling for liberation while the attacks continue.
Despite this all, for their continuous work and resilience, they have been nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Award.
Depois de crescer e vivenciar as repercussões violentas da ocupação israelense, da primeira e da segunda intifada, da invasão e demolição do campo e de ser baleado, tornou-se prisioneiro político por quatro anos, aos 17 anos. Após sua libertação, ele ingressou na escola Freedom Theatre, mais tarde morando na Noruega e trabalhando e treinando no prestigiado Nodic Black Theatre em Oslo. Tobasi retornou ao Campo de Refugiados de Jenin em 2013, após o assassinato de Juliano Mer-Khamis, e trabalhou no programa Criança e Juventude, além de atuar e dirigir diversas produções profissionais.
Torna-se, em 2020, o novo diretor artístico do coletivo, seguindo os passos de Nabil Al-Raee e todos aqueles que lutaram incansavelmente e se sacrificaram para manter as portas do teatro abertas após o assassinato de Juliano e cuja paixão, criatividade e dedicação fizeram do Freedom Theatre o que é hoje.

‘I don’t have a weapon and when I breathe here I resist’

Tobasi was born in Jenin Refugee camp and his personal story is one that echoes both the armed and cultural struggle that is inherent in the DNA of Palestinians.
After growing up experiencing the violent repercussions of the Israeli occupation, the first and second intifada, the invasion and bulldozing of the camp and being shot, he became a political prisoner for four years at 17 years old. Upon his release he joined The Freedom Theatre school later living in Norway and working and training with the prestigious Nodic Black Theatre in Oslo. Tobasi returned to Jenin Refugee Camp in 2013 after the assassination of Juliano Mer-Khamis, and worked within the Child & Youth program as well as performing and directing multiple professional productions.
He becomes, in 2020, the new artistic director of the colective, following the steps of Nabil Al-Raee and all those who fought tirelessly and have sacrificed to keep the theatre doors open after Juliano’s murder and whose passion, creativity and dedication has made The Freedom Theatre what it is today.
A prática de Zoe cruza-se com ativismo, desobediência civil, política e organização comunitária. Ela colabora com algumas das companhias, artistas e indivíduos de teatro mais radicais do mundo. Juntos, usam a cultura para lutar por mudanças sociais e políticas, construindo espaços onde histórias complexas, radicais e censuradas possam ser contadas.

Zoe Lafferty is a director, writer and producer creating work in theatre, virtual reality, documentary and audio. She is Associate Director at The Freedom Theatre in Jenin Refugee Camp, Palestine and the founder of Artists On The Frontline.
Zoe practice intersects with activism, civil disobedience, politics and community organising. She collaborates with some of the world’s most radical theatre companies, artists and individuals. Together they use culture to fight for social and political change, building spaces where complex, radical, and censored stories can be told.
ARTISTS ON THE FRONTLINE (ARTISTAS NA LINHA DE FRENTE) é um espaço criativo e uma plataforma para artistas radicais que trabalham na vanguarda da mudança social e política.
Seja através da mais recente tecnologia digital, nas ruas ou inventando novos protótipos, o seu trabalho responde de forma criativa às múltiplas crises que o mundo enfrenta. Os projetos reúnem agentes de mudança que estão a desafiar e a repensar os sistemas de injustiça em que vivemos, encontrando formas de perturbar o status quo e de contribuir para uma transformação sistemática em grande escala.
O trabalho é conduzido por artistas, comunidades, movimentos de justiça e agentes de mudança locais e internacionais, centrando e celebrando aqueles que estão nas periferias radicais, os forasteiros, agitadores e impostores. Ao explorar a intersecção entre artes, ativismo, política e organização comunitária, estão a construir um espaço onde conversas, ideias e histórias inovadoras, revolucionárias e censuradas podem ser contadas.

ARTISTS ON THE FRONTLINE is a creative space and platform for radical artists working at the forefront of social and political change.
Whether through the latest digital technology, on the streets, or by inventing new prototypes, their work creatively responds to the multiple crises the world is facing. Projects bring together agents of change who are challenging and rethinking the injustice systems we live in, finding ways to disrupt the status quo and contribute to large-scale systematic transformation.
The work is driven by local and international artists, communities, justice movements and change-makers, centring and celebrating those on the radical fringes, the outsiders, agitators and imposters. Through exploring the intersection between arts, activism, politics and community organising, we are building a space where groundbreaking, revolutionary and censored conversations, ideas and stories can be told.
